Shaquille O'Neal Says He Will Retire After 2009-10 Season

Shaquille O'Neal, the perennial NBA All-Star, announced Wednesday that he will retire once his current contract expires in 2009-10.

"My basketball career will be over in 735 days," O'Neal told News 13 television in Orlando, Fla. "And being an educated man, I've always had things to fall back on. So one of my options is law enforcement."

O'Neal, who was drafted by the Orlando Magic, still maintains a house in Central Florida. He spoke of his possible future plans Wednesday with the kids at the Pine Hills Boys and Girls Club.

Throughout his career, he has played with the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat and currently the Phoenix Suns. During a past offseason, O'Neal went through the training with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Reserve Academy before becoming a reserve officer with the L.A. Port Police.

O'Neal, affectionately known as Shaq, was the No. 1 pick of the 1992 NBA Draft and was the youngest member of the NBA 50 team in 1997. He won four NBA championships, one NBA MVP, and a 14-time NBA All-Star.
