The National Weather Service has warned Texas residents along the Gulf Coast to evacuate their homes ahead of Hurricane Ike or “face certain death” from its strong winds and expected 20ft storm surges predicted to hit early Saturday..
Galveston is currently sitting directly in Ike’s path with Houston in its sight.
Despite the ominous warnings, several residents in the Galveston Bay area have refused to heed the evacuate orders that have been issued.
That refusal leaves residents facing potential devastation as the National Weather Service issued a statement saying, “All neighborhoods and possibly entire coastal communities will be inundated during the period of the peak storm tide.” The warning continued, “Persons not heeding evacuation orders in single family one- or two-storey homes will face certain death.”
Hurricane Ike has already left a wake of destruction as it passed through the Caribbean, damaging about 80 percent of the homes in the Turks and Caicos, causing additional flooding in Haiti and causing severe damage in Cuba.
