South African Court Rules in Favor of Jacob Zuma, Corruption Case Won’t Go Forward

Jacob Zuma has a clear path to the South African presidency following a court’s decision to rule a corruption case against the African National Congress leader could not go forward.

Critics of Zuma have accused the 66-year-old of corruption, fraud and money laundering related to an arms deal in 1999. In the court’s opinion the charges leveled against Zuma were unsubstantiated and believed to be politically motivated.

While the case set aside, it didn’t mean Zuma wouldn’t face prosecution later as Judge Chris Nicholson explained the decision, “I must repeat that this application has nothing to do with the guilt or otherwise of the applicant. It deals only with the procedural point relating to his (Zuma) right to making representations before the respondent (the prosecution) makes a decision on whether to charge him.”

Zuma has had his difficulties over the past few years as he was dropped as deputy president in 2005 after his financial adviser was found guilty of taking a bribe on his behalf. Zuma was charged with corruption but that case fell apart when prosecutors announced they were not ready to proceed. In early April 2006 Zuma was acquitted of rape charges.

Despite all of his problems Zuma was elected AFC leader in December 2007 after a bitter campaign battle against current South African President Thabo Mbeki.

The presidential election is scheduled for April 2009.
