Los Angeles Angels closer Francisco "K-Rod" Rodriguez tied the MLB record for most saves in a season against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday.
The Angels defeated the Mariners, 7-4, in what seemed to be an easy win early on. The Angels were up 7-0 in seven innings, but the Mariners scored three in the eighth and one in the ninth.
Rodriguez was called from the bullpen in the ninth as fans gave a resounding applause. K-Rod maintained the win to tie Bobby Thigpen's Major League record of 57 saves in a season. Rodriguez has 16 games left to attempt to top the record.
The Angels clinched their fourth AL West title in five years on Wednesday. However, none of these division titles have led to a World Series. Their only World Series title came in 2002 as a wild card when Rodriguez was just 20.
Rodriguez, now 26, has 203 career saves and has blown six opportunities this year, one of those against the Mariners.
