Maikon Bonani kicked a 43-yeard field goal as time expired to lift the #19 South Florida Bulls (3-0) past the #13 Kansas Jayhawks (2-1) 37-34 on Friday night at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.
It looked as if it would be all Kansas early on as Todd Reesing was picking apart the South Florida secondary seemingly at will. The junior quarterback gave the Jayhawks a 7-0 lead after hitting Jonathan Wilson on a 36 yard TD toss and after the Jacob Branstetter kicked his second field goal of the first half Kansas was up 13-3.
Reesing boosted the advantage to 20-3 when he scored on a 4-yard keeper and it appeared like the Big 12 rep would hand the Big East another bruising defeat early in the year but Bulls quarterback Matt Grothe gave South Florida some hope with a 28-yard TD run late in the first half to cut their deficit to 20-10.
South Florida came out in the second half an owned the third quarter as Bonani booted a 23-yard field goal and then Grothe hit Taurus Johnson on a 21-yard TD pass and James Taylor scored on a 13-yard run to give the Bulls their first lead of the night 27-20.
The Bulls added another touchdown to their lead early in the fourth when Grothe found A.J. Love on a 37-yard score and South Florida was up 34-20.
Reesing didn’t flinch though and the quarterback quickly answered the Bulls charge with an aerial assault of his own as he hooked up with Wilson for the second time, an 18-yarder to cut the lead to 34-27. Four minutes later Reesing had the Jayhawks in the endzone again after finding Angus Quigley 14-yard scoring pass and the game was knotted at 34-34.
With less than two minutes remaining in the game Reesing had a chance to lead the Jayhawks down for the winning score. Starting on their own 7-yard-line the Jayhawks pushed their way up to the 40 with 41 seconds left but Reesing then threw a 1st and 10 pass over the middle that was intercepted by Nate Allen and returned down to the Kansas 27-yard-line with 30 seconds left on the clock.
South Florid moved the ball to the center of the field on their first play and called timeout with two seconds left, setting up the game-winner from the true freshman Bonani.
Reesing finished 34/51 for 373 yards and three touchdowns through the air and one on the ground while Jonathan Wilson had 171 yards receiving and two TDs and Kerry Meier finished with 120 yards receiving.
Matt Grothe matched Reesing’s performance with 338 yards passing on 32/45 with two touchdown passes and a rushing TD as well.
South Florida will now travel to play Florida International next week while Kansas hosts Sam Houston State.
