Paul the Octopus, who famously predicted the winner of 8 consecutive games in this year's FIFA World Cup, died Tuesday in Germany. The 2 and 1/2 year old octopus was reportedly found dead in his tank Tuesday morning in a German aquarium.
Stefan Porwoll, the manager of the Oberhausen Sea Life Center, said
that Paul "appears to have passed away peacefully during the night, of
natural causes.
"We are consoled by the knowledge that he enjoyed a good life here
and that the care provided him by our dedicated displays team could not
have been bettered.
"His success made him almost a bigger story
than the World Cup itself. We may decide to give Paul his own small
burial plot within our grounds and erect a modest permanent shrine.
"While
this may seem a curious thing to do for a sea creature, Paul achieved
such popularity during his short life that it may be deemed the most
appropriate course of action."Paul the Octopus achieved international fame earlier
this year when he correctly predicted the winner in all seven of
Germany's World Cup games. Paul also correctly predicted the winner of
the World Cup Finals.
