Brett Favre Has Fractured Ankle

Injury Might End NFL QB's Record

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre has a fractured ankle that may end his impressive NFL record of 291 consecutive games started. Vikings coach Brad Childress said Monday that an MRI performed on Favre's foot revealed two fractures.

"He's got great pain threshold and also great competitive zeal," said Childress, almost seeming to suggest that Favre might continue playing, even despite the two fractures.

ESPN medical analyst Dr. Michael Kaplan, who has not examined the 41-year-old 3-time NFL MVP, told ESPN, "Every other mortal would be out, but with [Favre], it's a longshot he could play."

Kaplan says that, if Favre wishes to play on the fracture foot, he could apply a local anesthetic that would effectively mask the pain. But, Kaplan notes, the anesthetic could also affect Favre's running.

Childress says that Favre's injury will not require surgery, at least not soon.
