Contaminated Milk Powder Blamed for Hundreds of Babies Suffering Kidney Stones

A Chinese dairy that sold contaminated milk powder that has led to more than 400 cases of babies suffering kidney stones reportedly knew their product has been compromised for several weeks before issuing a recall.

Tests on the milk powder have come back positive for the industrial chemical melamine, the agent believed to be responsible for at least one baby’s death so far. Chinese officials have reported 432 cases of babies falling ill with kidney stones thus far. Melamine is toxic chemical agent that is used in cleaning products, plastics and fertizilers.

Authorities have arrested 19 people tied to the Sanlu Group, producers of the contaminated milk.

According to health ministry official Gao Qiang “None of the milk powder was exported to other countries or regions.”
