Death Toll Rises to 18 in Los Angeles Train Crash, More than 135 Injured

The collision of a Metrolink commuter train and a Union Pacific freight train in Los Angeles has killed at least 18 people and left more than 135 injured.

Emergency crews continue to search for bodies in the wreckage, nearly 24 hours after the accident occurred. The head-on collision took place near the Chatsworth area of the San Fernando Valley and sent the engine of the Metrolink back into one of the coach cars and knocked both trains off the rail.

According to reports there were 222 people aboard the Metro that had departed from Union Station in downtown LA and were heading to Moorpark in Ventura County.

Rescue workers arrived shortly after the 4:32 p.m. crash and were immediately cutting away mangled pieces of metal to reach victims pinned inside the destroyed cars.

On Friday Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa predicted the death toll could reach 20 but that may be a conservative number as firefighters continue to remove bodies
