The U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Justice Program (OJP), Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) and Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), along with the Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), recently awarded close to $76 million in grants to increase the treatment capacity within drug courts.
The function of a drug court is to provide alternative approaches to imprisonment such as addiction treatment as opposed to conventional jail time for offenders.
“These grants will significantly impact the dynamic within jails and prisons across the United States,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside
Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “It is estimated that 60 percent of all individuals within the criminal justice system have substance abuse problems. If courts are given the means to intervene in a manner that rehabilitates an individual as opposed to just incarcerating him or her, states will have the opportunity to short circuit the cycle of drug abuse and, as a result, drug related crime rates will fall. The problem for such programs has always been the lack of funding. Thankfully, the government saw the need and the success of such programs and answered the call by providing these grants. These programs really do create a win-win for everyone: the offender, the state, the criminal justice system and society at large.”
The amount of grants distributed has been equally allocated among adult and juvenile drug courts. The funds will assist states in rehabilitation of offenders through addiction treatment programs at various drug rehab facilities across the US.
