AP Top 25 College Football Scores: #24 Illinois Fighting Illini Survive Scare from Louisiana-Lafayette

Daniel Dufrene collected 127 yards rushing on 19 carries and had a TD on a 10-yard pass while Juice Williams threw for 147 yards and a touchdown as the #24 Illinois Fighting Illini (2-1) put together a less than impressive effort but beat the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns (0-2) 20-17 on Saturday.

It was the Illinois defense that put the Illini in the endzone initially as Brit Miller force a fumble on Louisiana-Lafayette’s quarterback Michael Desormeaux and then collected the loose ball and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown and a 10-0 lead.

Following a Cajuns field goal Williams lead the Illini offense to a score, hooking up with Dufrene on a 10-yard TD in the second quarter and Illinois carried a 17-3 lead into the half.

Both teams failed to score in the third quarter but Desormeaux brought his team back to within seven in the fourth quarter after scrambling 34-yards for a touchdown with 5:30 left on the clock. Illinois was able to respond though as Matt Eller kicked his second field goal of the game to seal the win for the Illini.

Desmormeaux led the Cajuns to a late TD with 18 seconds left on the clock but Illinois recovered the ensuing on-side kick to end the game.

Illinois will travel to #17 Penn State next week while Louisiana-Lafayette take on Kent State.
