Jimmy Clausen threw for 147 yards and two touchdowns, Golden Tate had 127 yards receiving and a TD, Robert Hughes collected 79 yards on the ground and two TDs and Notre Dame (2-0) forced six turnovers as the Fighting Irish knocked off the Michigan Wolverines (0-2) 35-17 on Saturday.
Notre Dame’s defense started early, forcing the Wolverines to fumble on their first drive and after taking over on the Michigan 11-yard-line the Irish pounded it home on a 2-yard run from Robert Hughes. The Irish then recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and Clausen found Duval Kamara on a 10-yard toss for a 14-0 lead.
Michigan finally put a drive together but turned the ball over on a 4th and 6 and after a pass interference call put the Irish on the Michigan 48-yard-line Clausen found Golden Tate on a quick slant and he broke a few tackles and went 48 yards for a TD to move up 21-0 in the first quarter.
Michigan appeared to settle down and climbed back to cut their deficit to 28-17 by halftime and in the third quarter it looked like they would slash that deficit to four as they moved deep into Irish territory but a Kevin Grady fumble was recovered by Notre Dame.
After Notre Dame punted following the fumble recovery Michigan had the ball heading into the fourth quarter and on the first play of the final frame quarterback Steven Threet fumbled and Brian Smith recovered and went 35-yards for the touchdown and the 35-17 advantage.
Notre Dame will face Michigan State next week while Michigan will take on Wisconsin in two weeks.
