The death toll in the Los Angeles train crash involving a Metrolink commuter train and a Union Pacific freight train on Friday has now reached 25 while another 135 were left injured.
According to the most recent reports the engineer on the Metrolink ran a red light, causing the head-on collision with the freight train that pushed the engine of the commuter train into the passenger car and knocked both trains off the rail.
Efforts to free trapped victims and recover bodies lasted more than a day as rescue workers cut their way through mangled metal in an effort to reach passengers pinned inside the destroyed cars.
The Metrolink train had left Union Station in downtown Los Angeles and was heading to Moorpark in Ventura County when it slammed into the freight train near the Chatsworth area of the San Fernando Valley.
