David Foster Wallace, the dark-witted author of “Infinite Jest,” was found dead inside his Claremont, California home by his wife on Friday. The 46-year-old is believed to have committed suicide by hanging.
Wallace became a recognize figure in the literary world in 1987 when he penned “The Broom of the System” at the age of 24 and solidified his spot among great contemporary writers in 1996 when “Infinite Jest” was published.
In 2002 Wallace began teaching creative writing and English at Pomona College and he continued to write short fiction, with his work often appearing in magazines like Esquire, Harper’s and The New Yorker.
Dean Gary Kates of Pomona reflected on Wallace’s impact at the school noting, “He cared deeply for his students and transformed the lives of many young people. It's a great loss to our teaching faculty.”
