Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai have reached a power-sharing agreement that could bring stability end an internal struggle that has plagues the African nation since their March presidential election.
Under the agreement Mugabe will retain his role as President while Movement for Democratic Change leader Tsvangirai will hold the post of prime minister. While both political leaders recognized the agreement posed challenges they pledged to work through them and forma stronger Zimbabwe.
Taking from a speech Mugabe issued in 1980 Tsvangirai stated “it is time to turn our swords into ploughshares.”
While the terms of the compromise have not fully been divulged it is believed Mugabe and Tsvangirai would hold a 50-50 division of power with Mugabe retaining the head of state role as well as the head of cabinet.
Tsvangirai will have more of an impact on day-to-day life as he will head a council of ministers with the MDC expected to have 16 ministers while Mugabe’s ZANU-PF would hold 15 spots by ministers.
