“Indoor Air Package Seal of Approval” to be Launched at Building a Framework for Healthy Housing 2008 National Healthy Homes Conference

Award-winning indoor environmental consulting firm Pure Air Control Services, Inc. to exhibit (booth # 45) at HUD and EPA-sponsored conference

Baltimore, MD, September 15, 2008 – The United States government is increasing efforts to promote the design and building of healthy homes free of lead, chemicals, mold, moisture and pests.

Leading indoor environmental consulting firm Pure Air Control Services, Inc. will contribute as an exhibitor (booth # 45) and provide a poster session at the Building a Framework for Healthy Housing 2008 National Healthy Homes Conference.

Four federal agencies are hosting the first national summit on the topic, beginning Monday in Baltimore. Several U.S.-funded studies will be unveiled that show how renovations in Cleveland, Seattle and New Orleans lowered the risk of asthma and other health problems for residents.

"Health doesn't happen in the hospital. It happens at home," says Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Our goal isn't to be Big Brother, but people are asking for advice and information."

Sponsored by HUD and the EPA, the conference will be held at the Baltimore Hilton, and will gather experts from around the country to address a serious and under-recognized problem: the link between substandard housing and health conditions such as asthma, allergies, and lead poisoning—and how to create a national healthy housing agenda that will raise the standard for housing development in the future.

This week's three-day summit is likely to draw more than a thousand participants — the largest gathering of people working to make homes healthier.

“The importance of healthy housing has been of paramount importance in the past decade.  With allergy and asthma related illness increasing exponentially over the years it is important to understand the indoor environmental conditions in order to provide a more effective based solution  on improving the indoor environment” stated Dr Rajiv Sahay, lab director for EDLab Pure Air Control Services.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is using existing funds to develop a program, Indoor Air Package, that will give homes a seal of approval if they use certain building techniques to protect against radon, pests and pollutants.

The package, in use in five states, will be launched nationally as early as next year, says Tom Kelly, director of the EPA's indoor air program. He says it builds on the EPA's Energy Star program, which began in 1992 to promote efficient appliances.

With more than two decades of IAQ experience, Florida-based Pure Air Control Services, Inc. works with the medical community as well as both private and public sector on identification of indoor allergens e.g. mycotoxins, endotoxins, dust mite, mold, etc…through Building Health Check services.  The firm also provides a low cost mechanism DIY IAQ Screen Check product line for the identification of various IAQ pollutants.

Other Building a Framework for Healthy Housing 2008 National Healthy Homes Conference sessions of the conference will include:

  • Developing enforcement and regulatory strategies [for healthy housing]
  • Marketing healthy housing
  • Creating healthy housing through research
  • Mainstreaming healthy housing principles
