Nazi War Crime Trial Begins in Munich

The Nazi war crime trial involving former German infantry commander Josef Scheungraber is underway as the 90-year-old is facing allegations that he ordered the murder of 14 civilians  in a Tuscan village in 1944, charges he denies.

Scheungraber had enjoyed decades of freedom, having run a furniture shop, served on a town council and been recognized for municipal service. Now he is facing the possibility of spending his final years behind bars.

According to prosecutors, soldiers under Scheungraber’s command shot and killed four people in a Tuscan village and then herded another 11 civilians into a barn before blowing it up. One of those inside the barn survived the blast.

Scheungraber has said he did not order the attacks and has stated he wasn’t at the location when the attacks occurred.
