Miami Heat Lose First Game to Boston Celtics

The Old Big Three Defeat the New Big Three

On Monday night, during what was widely considered to be one of the most highly anticipated season openers in NBA history, the highly touted, new Miami Heat lineup lost their first regular season game to the Boston Celtics, the 2010 NBA Finals runners-up. The final score: 88-80 Boston, at Boston.

The game was never really in Miami's control, a fact that surely surprised many basketball fans and analysts alike. Boston took a lead in  the first quarter, and they never lost it. At various points during the second half of the game, the Heat threatened a comeback, getting as close as 80-83 at one point. But alas, the comeback never came.

Ray Allen led Boston scoring with 20. Paul Pierce delivered 19 points, in addition to 9 rebounds and 3 assists. Kevin Garnett, the final member of the "Old Big Three", contributed 10 points and rebounds. Rajon Rondo, who is increasingly becoming the backbone of the Celtics, recorded 17 assists, 2 more than the entire Heat team had.

On the Heat side, James led the scoring with 31 points. He also led blocks with 2. Somewhat surprisingly, Wade was not a big factor when it came to points, scoring only 13 points on 4 of 16 shooting. As many were quick to note, however, Wade played only 3 minutes during the entire pre-season, so he may have lacked the kind of preparation that was needed to compete against one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. Chris Bosh contributed 8 points and 8 rebounds.

One of the biggest problems on the Heat side was definitely the amount of turnovers the team had. Surprisingly, most of those turnovers came from the New Big Three. Wade, Bosh, and LeBron combined for 15 of the team's 17 turnovers during the game - 8 from James, 6 from Wade, and 1 from Bosh.

Many Heat fans, perhaps too optimistically, were hoping that the Heat would actually achieve a perfect 82-0 record this season. But that dream is now lost, at least for this season. "This is one of 82," said Wade, whose lackluster performance certainly had at least something to do with Miami's loss. "Sorry if everyone thought we were going to go 82-0. It just ain't happening."

The Heat may have not started off their season in the way many Heat fans would have liked, but that doesn't mean the Heat will not achieve greatness this season. James said, "It's a feel-out process. When you have so many options, it's something I'm not accustomed to, having that many threats out on the court at the same time." Celtics head coach Doc Rivers says, "They're going to be great."
