Prince William has put his plans to prepare for Head of State “on the back burner” and has opted for a full-time military career. The prince is set to begin training to become a pilot in the Royal Air Force’s search and rescue teams, his office announced Monday.
“The time I spent with the RAF earlier this year made me realize how much I love flying. Joining Search and Rescue is a perfect opportunity for me to serve in the Forces operationally, while contributing to a vital part of the country’s Emergency Services,” William said in a statement.
The 26-year-old was expected to leave the military by the end of 2008 and pursue his royal duties and charitable work. Instead, he will begin his 18-month training in January 2009. The training will be completed by 2010 and William will begin a tour of duty that may last up to 3 years.
A spokesman for the prince refused to comment on how his military career will affect his relationship with his girlfriend of 6 years, Kate Middleton. “We do not comment on personal relationships,” the spokesman said.
