Thousands Without Power in Ohio, Pennsylvania Due to Hurricane Ike Aftermath

Severe wind storms in Ohio and Pennsylvania have caused power outages throughout the state, leaving thousands of residents without electricity on Monday.

The wind storms are a result of Hurricane Ike sweeping through Texas and leaving wind storms throughout the Midwest, which caused floods and power outages across both states.

At one point, Duke Energy reported that 90% of its 800,000 customers in the Cincinnati area were without power. As of Monday morning, 250,000 Duke Energy customers are still out.

Ohio Edison reported that 188,000 of its customers are without power. Youngstown was hit the hardest as 56,000 people are without electricity. According to Vindy.com, 25,000 in Salem lost power; Alliance, 13,000; Warren, 16,000; Kinsman, 6,000; New Castle, 20,000; Mercer, 27,000; and Cranberry Township, 25,000.

More than 1 million FirstEnergy customers in the Ohio service area were affected by the storms. Most of their customers live in northeast Ohio, which includes Akron, Massillon and Cleveland. Akron has 41,000 residents without power, Massillon with 12,000 and Cleveland with over 200,000.

Dayton Power and Light reported that 225,000 of its customers were without power in the company's coverage area. Thousands more are without power in and around Columbus, according to American Electric Power.

In Pennsylvania, the three main power companies in the southwestern region of the state, Duquesne Light, Penn Power and Allegheny Power, have reported more than 150,000 customers without power.

The areas with the most widespread outages are in Butler County, about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh, and Arnold, a town in Westmoreland County about 20 miles northeast of the city.
