James
Cameron’s Avatar blew away half the population with its incredible special
effects and visual storytelling, and now it’s been confirmed that the film that
even sent some fans spiraling into depression at the thought of never getting
to visit “Pandora” will be made into a trilogy.
Avatar fans have been speculating about the trilogy rumours since mere hours after the first film debuted in theatres, but James Cameron has now officially turned the rumours into fact. In a statement to Access Hollywood, James Cameron explained the general premise for the next film, and his hopes for the entire series:
“Avatar’ was conceived as an epic work of fantasy – a world that audiences could visit, across all media platforms, and this moment marks the launch of the next phase of that world. With two new films on the drawing boards, my company and I are embarking on an epic journey with our partners at Twentieth Century Fox. Our goal is to meet and exceed the global audience’s expectations for the richness of ‘Avatar’s’ visual world and the power of the storytelling."
"In the second and third films, which will be self contained stories that also fulfil a greater story arc, we will not back off the throttle of ‘Avatar’s’ visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world,” Cameron said. “I’m looking forward to returning to Pandora, a world where our imaginations can run wild.”
Pandora has indeed let our imaginations run wild. Fan sites popped up all over the internet in the wake of the first film, and fans were already gearing up to expand the the universe. Avatar topped Cameron’s other blockbuster Titanic
as the highest grossing film of all time, and single handedly ushered in a new
era of 3D movie technology, as well as making a massive $2.8 billion worldwide. The new films stand to make a truly phenomenal amount of money if they are anything like the first.
