Georgia Moving Closer to Integration with NATO, No Timetable Set

While Georgia is moving closer to integration with NATO and has received encouraging words from the alliance’s secretary general Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, there has been no firm date set for the former Soviet republic as there are still issues that must be reconciled before inclusion.

De Hoop Scheffer was in Tbilisi for the NATO-Georgia Commission and while he expressed hope for Georgia’s “accelerated” integration he did recognize the country still needed to cement its course of democracy.

The secretary general supported Georgia in regard to their conflict with Russia last month, stating the Russians used a disproportionate use of force and found it difficult to accept their continued presence in the regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Despite having the support of many of the 26-member nation alliance there are those inside NATO that have pointed to the rules stating before a membership can be offered a country must have all ethnic disputes and external territorial disputes resolved.

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili welcomed the encouraging words of de Hoop Scheffer and the presence of NATO members, stating “Your presence sends a... signal to the world that Georgia, together with its friends and allies, does not stand alone.’
