An ambush near Mauritania’s border with Western Sahara has left 12 soldiers dead and officials pointing the finger of blame at Islamist rebels tied to al-Qaeda.
The group al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb has threatened to target Mauritania following a military coup last month that overthrew the democratically elected government.
While the group was organized to overthrow the government of Algeria they have had their hand in several attacks aimed at pushing their cause.
Following the Aug. 7 coup the group encouraged citizens to take up arms against the new government.
