Tony Romo was 21/30 for 312 yards and three touchdowns, Terrell Owens had three receptions for 89 yards and a pair of TDs and Felix Jones collected 247 yards on kick returns including a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown as the Dallas Cowboys (2-0) outslugged the Philadelphia Eagles (1-1) 41-37 on Monday Night Football.
Romo and Owens didn’t waste much time to perform on a grand state as the two hooked up on a 72-yard touchdown following a David Akers field goal in the first quarter. For Owens it was career TD number 131, moving him past Chris Carter for sole possession of second place on the all-time list fronted by Jerry Rice’s 197, and gave Dallas a 7-3 advantage.
After Akers kicked his second field goal of the game Felix Jones provided more star power as he took the ensuing kickoff back 98-yards for a touchdown and Dallas to a 14-6 lead into the second quarter.
Donovan McNabb appeared to settle into a rhythm in the second quarter and put the Eagles in the end zone in the opening minute of the second frame with a 6-yard toss to Brian Westbrook and following a botched kickoff that put them on their own five-yard-line Romo fumbled in the endzone and Chris Gocong recovered for an Eagles touchdown and Philly was in front 20-14.
Dallas bounced right back as Romo marched them down the field and eventually hit Owens on a 4-yard strike in the endzone to reclaim the lead but Westbrook crossed the goal line for the second time, this time on a one-yard run and the Eagles held a 27-21 lead. Akers then added his third field goal of the half to push the lead to 30-21 with 45 seconds left in the half but Dallas managed to get Nick Folk within kicking range and he booted a 51-yard field goal to put the score at 30-24 the half.
Things slowed down considerably in the second half but Dallas still managed to find the endzone as Marion Barber put the Cowboys in front 31-30 on a 17-yard TD reception but Westbrook gave the Eagles the lead once more on a one-yard run.
Following a Folk field goal that cut their lead to 37-34 the Eagles suffered a devastating turnover when McNabb and Westbrook couldn’t get the exchange straight and Dallas recovered Philly’s only turnover. Romo didn’t waste the opportunity as he positioned Barber for his second TD of the game and the one-yard run gave the Cowboys the 41-37 lead.
Dallas will travel to Green Bay next week while Philadelphia hosts Pittsburgh.
