French Commandos Free Sailors Held by Somali Pirates

Two sailors captured by pirates off the coast of Somalia earlier this month were freed by French commandos in an operation that took just 10-minutes to complete.

The two sailors had been traveling from Australia to France when their boat was seized by pirates. Those pirates then demanded a $1.4 million ransom for their freedom.

Instead, French President Nicolas Sarkozy gave the go-ahead to a 30-man operation that overran the pirates. One of the pirates was killed in the operation while another six were captured.

Pirates often target cargo ships, yachts and fishing boats off the coast of Somalia, considered by many to be the most dangerous waters in the world. Several countries have resorted to placing armed ships in the waters to protect traveling vessels.
