Ukraine’s Pro-Western Coalition Collapses, President Viktor Yushchenko Could Call Snap Election

The problems between Ukraine’s President Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko have now resulted in a complete failure of their pro-Western coalition as parliament speaker Arseny Yatsenyuk announced, “I officially declare the coalition of democratic forces... in Ukraine's parliament dissolved.”

Yushchenko had pulled his Our Ukraine bloc from the coalition earlier this month following the Tymoshenko Bloc’s decision to support laws that were promoted by the pro-Moscow opposition Party of Regions.

Yushchenko viewed those laws as a step towards stripping him of power and on Sept 3 his party pulled out of the coalition.

Parliament now has 30 days to form a new ruling coalition or Yushchenko could dissolve the body and call a snap election.

At one time Yushchenko and Tymoshenko were close allies as they led the 2004 Orange Revolution that ended a pro-Moscow push for the presidency by the Party of Regions leader Viktor Yanukovyh. Their alliance was short lived though as they have now become bitter rivals, positioning themselves for the 2010 presidential election.
