Jacob Zuma may face yet another challenge in his pursuit to become South Africa’s next president as opposition leader Helen Zille has said her party is prepared to take the African National Congress leader to court if state prosecutors opt to renew corruption charges against the 66-year-old.
Last week a high court judge tossed out the charges and suggested they had been politically motivated. Zuma has denied any involvement in corruption, racketeering and money-laundering.
Despite Judge Chris Nicholson’s contention that the charges should be thrown out, that decision was not based on the belief that Zuma was innocent, rather it was a technicality dealing with the prosecutions failure to notify Zuma before renewing the charges.
The charges of corruption had originally been pursued two years ago but were put on hold when prosecutors determined they were not ready to move forward.
Zuma became President of the ANC in December after defeating current South African President Thabo Mbeki in a highly contested election.
