Mount Merapi in Java, Indonesia erupted for the second time this week, sending more gas and ash into the air. Thursday afternoon’s eruption came just after victims of the first eruption were buried. At least 32 people died Tuesday when Merapi erupted.
It is not yet known if the second eruption claimed any lives. A government volcanologist identified only as Surono said Java Island will remain on the highest alert. "The threat is still there which is why the status [will] still stay at red," said Surono.
The government issued the alert Monday after volcanologist warned an eruption was imminent. Tens of thousands of people fled to shelters while others chose to stay behind to guard their homes and crops.
