Notre Dame student death being investigated

By: Jesse Rousseau

The death of a Notre Dame student filming football practice is under investigation.

20-year-old junior Declan Sullivan was filming football practice from a scissor lift when wind gusts of over 50 mph toppled the tower. He was transported to a South Bend hospital, where he later passed away.

At this point, there are a lot of unknowns. It is still uncertain who made the lift or who cleared Sullivan to go up in the scissor lift on Wednesday. A spokesman for the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration confirmed that an investigation is under way, but said it's too early to know when any findings would be released. Notre Damn plans to hold a press conference on the accident at 2 p.m. EST today.

According to reports, the hydraulic lift stood nearly 50 feet high while taking on the strong winds. It eventually gave out, breaking through the practice field's fence and landing in the middle of a street. Even the victim seemed to be aware of the dangerous conditions. He posted the following tweet at 3:22 p.m. EST: "Gusts of wind up to 60 mph. Well today will be fun at work. I guess I've lived long enough." Roughly 90 minutes after that message, the tragic accident occurred.
