Giants Embarrass Rangers in Game 2, Take 2-0 Series Lead

By Jesse Rousseau

For a team that barely beat out San Diego for a playoff spot earlier this month, the San Francisco Giants are looking pretty darn impressive.

Matt Cain and company gave up only four hits on the night and Edgar Renteria added a home run and three RBIs, resulting in a 9-0 San Francisco win Thursday night. The win gives the Giants a 2-0 Series lead and puts them at the halfway point to claiming their first World Series title in 56 years. They hope they can wrap the series on the road this weekend. "We've put ourselves in a good situation," said Cain, who hasn't allowed an earned run in the postseason. "We've just got to take that confidence and some of the good approaches that we've had into these last two games and take them down to Texas with us."

No team has come back from a 2-0 Series deficit since the 1996 Yankees against Atlanta. In addition, the Giants have won each time they have taken a 2-0 lead: in 1922, 1933 and 1954. However, Rangers manager Ron Washington seems optimistic about his teams chances at home. "We certainly don't feel like we're defeated. We're heading home. They took care of us in their ballpark; now we're headed to ours."

Loser C.J. Wilson didn't pitch badly, allowing just two runs and three hits in six-plus innings. He gave up Renteria's fifth-inning homer, then left the mound in the seventh with a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand. Colby Lewis is expected to start Game 3 for the Rangers against Jonathan Sanchez.

The series will resume tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m EST in Arlington, Texas.
