Vikings Coach Might Bench Favre, End Record
Brett Favre would probably love to be the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night. But according to multiple reports, Vikings coach Brad Childress might choose to sit Favre, thereby ending one of the most impressive records in NFL history.
Favre, who made his NFL debut in 1991, has not missed a single game since September 27th, 1992, when he was named the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. With 291 consecutive games played, he now holds the all-time record for most consecutive starts by a quarterback and most starts by any position.
''That's legendary, honestly,'' said Vikings teammate Visanthe Shiancoe. ''Let's be real: 291 games straight. First thing that comes to my
mind is, of course, I'm a little jealous. That's something that wows me
as well."
But Favre now has a fractured ankle, for which he has reportedly been wearing a protective, over-sized boot. The 41-year-old 3-time NFL MVP missed his second straight day of practice on Thursday and has been seen limping through the locker room.
When asked if he thought he could play against the New England Patriots on Sunday, Favre said, ''I wouldn't put anything past me, to be honest with you.'' But Favre has reportedly said that he doesn't think he will be allowed to play.
''He's been a little better every day,'' Childress said Thursday, indicating that it's still a possibility that Favre will be able to extend his streak.
''Whether it's good enough to play in an NFL football game remains to be
seen. Just have to take it a day at a time.''
But an NFL source told The Minneapolis Star Tribune that Childress is leaning towards playing Tavris Jackson instead of Favre on Sunday.
''I'm pretty sure [the streak is] important to [Favre]." said Shiancoe. "But I know that the team's
welfare is more important to him. I'm pretty sure he'll make the best
decision for the team.''
