NFL sources say Minnesota coach Brad Childress is leaning toward starting Tarvaris Jackson over Brett Favre at quarterback this week.
Favre is recovering from two fractures to his ankle, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. He injured the ankle in last week's lost to Green Bay. However, this isn't the first time Favre has experienced problems with his ankle. He had surgery performed on the area less than six months ago to prepare him for his 20th NFL season.
After missing his second straight day of practice yesterday, Childress said today would be a key day in the decision of whether or not he'll play the 41-year-old quarterback. The coach told ESPN's Ed Werder that he planned to have Favre attempt to demonstrate that he has some mobility on the field. From there, the Vikings' coaches will determine if he's improving enough to start against the New England Patriots. Patriots coach Bill Belichick said he isn't listening to reports favoring Jackson to start and added that his team will prepare for all players.
Favre did walk around the Vikings' facility yesterday without his protective boot, but was seen limping through the locker room with a heavy wrap on the injury. When asked his opinion on starting this Sunday, Favre said, "I wouldn't put anything past me, to be honest with you."
If Favre doesn't start, it would end his league-record streak of 291-straight starts.
