Thailand Elects New PM, Brother-in-Law of Ousted Thaksin Shinawatra

Somchai Wongsawat, brother-in-law of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, has become Thailand’s newest leader after winning a majority parliamentary vote on Wednesday.

Wongsawat had been backed by the governing People Power Party (PPP) and expressed gratitude for his supporters, pledging to carry out his duties to the best of his abilities. The 61-year-old takes over the duties of Samak Sundaravej who was forced out as prime minister last week after being found guilty of violating constitutional law.

While Wongsawat has received the support of the governing PPP there are many who question his allegiance to Thaksin Shinawatra who fled to the UK to avoid corruption charges. Opposition party members have said Wongsawat will merely be acting as a proxy for Shinawatra.

There will be plenty of work for Wongsawat as he is now faced with the task of restoring order to a country that has seemingly fractured. Several of the key government buildings in Bangkok have been occupied by protestors supporting the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD).

Those protestors have demanded the current government resign but Wongsawat insisted, “It's about time for national reconciliation in Thailand.”
