China Announces Plans for Nationwide Testing of Dairy Products

Following the death of three infants due to contaminated milk formula Chinese officials have announced they will conduct nationwide tests on all dairy products.

More than 6,000 babies fell ill after ingesting milk formula containing melamine, a toxic chemical used in fertilizer and cleaning products. Over 1,000 of those babies remain hospitalized with varying degrees of kidney failure.

The scale of the problem became evident when 22 companies producing formula showed samples that contained the chemical melamine.

In response China will dispatch 5,000 inspectors nationwide to act as monitors and test dairy products for the deadly chemical.

As a result of the contaminated milk formula crisis six people have been arrested, all of whom were believed to have either knowingly added melamine to the milk or knowingly sold the tainted milk. By adding melamine to the milk it gave the appearance of a higher protein content.
