Halloween weekend
provided the perfect kickoff for Lionsgate’s latest 3D horror flick ‘Saw’. The
film opened at number one in the US box office, and grossed a whopping
$22,500,000- in one weekend.
Halloween was the perfect time to release the
creepy flick, which reportedly concludes the series. However, MTV News reports
that the film actually opened in one of the lower spots for the franchise,
coming in just ahead of Saw I and IV. Still, the film bumped competing
horror-fest Paranormal Activity II out of the top spot, dropping it down to
number two in the box office with where it ended up grossing $16,500,000 this
weekend.
The Paramount sequel to 2009’s hit took in some $65,658,000 total and
did very well considering its $3 million budget. Star laden action flick “Red” came in third with 10,811,000,
a respectable amount for opening weekend. The buzz surrounding the film, which
stars Hollywood luminaries Helen Mirren, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, and John
Malkovich, seems to have been worth it with Rotten Tomatoes giving the film a
69% rating. It successfully wrapped up the top three spots for this weekend’s
box office.
Jackass 3D dropped down two spots to number four, followed by Hereafter- the Clint Eastwood directed drama starring Matt Damon- and Disney’s Secretariat at five and six respectively. The Social Network was down two spots this weekend from number five to number seven but is still clinging to the top ten, and Life As We Know It, The Town, and Conviction- up a whopping 15 spots- came in at numbers eight, nine, and ten, and rounded out the top ten films for this weekend.
