In a brand new web TV episode of maniaTV’s behind the scenes music show, All Access, host Samantha Maloney joins the experimental rock band, Liars following their live performance on the maniaTV ‘Stage 5’. Liars, who have come to be categorized by their dramatic stylistic shifts between albums, are a three piece band consisting of Australian-born Angus Andrew (vocals/guitar), Aaron Hemphill (percussion, guitar, synth), and Julian Gross (drums). Their sound is often compared with bands like Radiohead and Interpol due to their consistent interest in electronic rhythm and sound texture.

Samantha sits down with Liars to talk with the group about their teenage concert experiences, what it’s like to open for Radiohead, and the challenges of producing a music video. Samantha is also treated to a brief explanation about how each Liars song gets created. The interview concludes with a unanimous decision to grab some late night celebratory drinks.

Samantha then heads to DFest, a rock music festival in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to visit the band, Clutch right before they jump on stage. Clutch is a hard rock band based out of Germantown, Maryland that consists of five band members, including Neil Fallon (vocals), Tim Sult (guitar), Dan Maines (bass), Jean-Paul Gaster (drums), and Mick Schauer (organist). Their music combines elements of funk, Led Zeppelin, and metal and is said to have been inspired by the work of Faith No More. The band has released 12 albums since forming over a decade ago.

The new episode of All Access premieres this week on maniaTV.com.

About Liars

Indie-rock outfit Liars was formed in 2000 as a result of a "musicians wanted" ad posted in a New York City record store. Their unique sound was derived from a marriage between synth pads/programmed drums to the fundamental guitar-bass-drums formula of punk rock. Their first album, They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top, was released in 2001 and produced in just two days by engineer producer Steve Revitte (Beastie Boys, Lee "Scratch" Perry). In 2004, inspired by experimental electronica music as well as German witchcraft folklore, the band released their second album They Were Wrong, So We Drowned. Not a band to remain stylistically static, Liars' 2005 release, Drum's Not Dead, once again marked a major musical shift that the band likens to "Brian Wilson's wilder sonic journeys, or Radiohead's embrace of experimental abstraction." Drum's Not Dead is also a highly ambitious and groundbreaking work in that it involves a "cinematic sister project"--36 short films (three for each track) to be included on the standard album CD.
