A mass grave discovered in the Mexican state of Guerrero may contain the bodies of 20 tourists kidnapped in the city of Acapulco in September. Authorities have pulled 18 bodies from the grave so far. More bodies are expected to be found.
Fernando Monreal, Guerrero’s investigative police chief, said it has not been determined whether the bodies are those of the kidnapped tourists. The men, who were visiting Acapulco from Michoacan state, were abducted September 30.
A YouTube video showing two men being interrogated led police to the grave Wednesday. In the video, the two men admit to killing and burying “the Michoacanos” to get revenge on the La Familia drug cartel. Two bodies, which are believed to be those of the men in the video, were found lying on top of the grave with a sign saying, “The people they killed are buried here.”
The families of the 20 kidnap victims say the men, all mechanics, saved up money to vacation together. Investigators say the men had no criminal records and did work as mechanics. The men have not been linked to any gangs or drug cartels.
