Week 2 of the NFL season answered some questions that carried over from Week 1 as Matt Cassel appears to be capable of fitting into the Patriots system having led New England to a road win over Brett Favre and the New York Jets; the loss of Marques Colston certainly slowed down the passing game of Drew Brees in a loss to the Washington Redskins; and the San Diego Chargers could be facing a hard luck season after losing Shawne Merriman in the opening week and falling for the second time in the final minutes.
Impressive wins by the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants certainly solidified the NFC East as the best in football while the New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills look like they could be fighting for AFC East supremacy all year.
Heading into Week 3 several teams will be playing with a sense of desperation as their 0-2 starts have already placed them seemingly must-win situations. The Minnesota Vikings, Cincinnati Bengals, Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns, Seattle Seahawks and San Diego Chargers all started the year as playoff contenders but could be looking to next year if they fall this week.
NFL Week 3 Schedule
After opening the season with an impressive win against the Lions the Atlanta Falcons (1-1) and Matt Ryan ran into problems last week against the Bucs but are still a 6-point favorite over the Kansas City Chiefs (0-2) who were embarrassed by the Raiders last week.
Trent Edwards has the Buffalo Bills (2-0) tied atop the AFC East after a big road win against the jaguars last week and they’ll be a 9.5-point pick over the Oakland Raiders (1-1) who bounced back from an ugly opening week loss to knock off the Chiefs in their second game.
With Kerry Collins taking the snaps the Tennessee Titans (2-0) stayed perfect last week with a road win over the Bengals and now they’re back home as a 5-pointfavorite over the Houston Texans (0-1) who had their game with the Ravens postponed last week due to Hurricane Ike.
Despite the questions surrounding their defense the New York Giants (2-0) have been one of the most impressive teams early on and they look to stay perfect as a 13.5-point pick over the Cincinnati Bengals (0-2) who have shown little thus far.
Jason Campbell looked like he found his rhythm last week as the Washington Redskins (1-1) beat the Saints and they will be a 3-point pick over the Arizona Cardinals (2-0) who have benefited from the leadership of Kurt Warner and facing the 49ers and Dolphins to start the season.
Matt Cassel seems to have silenced any questions about his ability to fill in for Tom Brady as the New England Patriots (2-0) picked up a huge win on the road against the Jets last week and they’re big favorites on Sunday as they carry a 12.5-point number against the Miami Dolphins (0-2) on Sunday.
After knocking of the Colts in Week 1 the Chicago Bears (1-1) gave away their game against the Panthers but will enter their home opener as a 3-point favorite over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-1) who looked solid defensively last week against the Falcons.
Gus Frerotte takes over for an ineffective Tarvaris Jackson as quarterback and the Minnesota Vikings (0-2) will be hoping that will get them back on track as they have been labeled a 3.5-point favorite over the Carolina Panthers (2-0) who have found a way to win in the closing minutes of both their games.
While the season didn’t start they way they had hope with ugly losses to the Bills and 49ers the Seattle Seahawks (0-2) will look to shore up their defensive problems as they enter Sunday’s game against the desperate St. Louis Rams (0-2) as a 9.5-point favorite.
After a big road win against the Seahawks last week the San Francisco 49ers (1-1) return to the Bay with some momentum and are currently a 4-point favorite against the disappointing Detroit Lions (0-2) who have lost to the Falcons and were blown out at home by the Packers last week.
Jay Cutler has looked impressive in the first two games of the season and after last week’s crazy finish against the Chargers the Denver Broncos (2-0) have been listed as a 5.5-point favorite over a New Orleans Saints (1-1) squad that fell to the Redskins last week.
Despite falling to the Cowboys on Monday Night Football the Philadelphia Eagles (1-1) certainly looked like one of the strongest teams in the NFC but they’ll have their work cut out for them this week when they face the Pittsburgh Steelers (2-0) as a 3-point favorite.
Peyton Manning has had a rough start to the 2008 NFL season but he managed to lead the Indianapolis Colts (1-1) to a big road win against the Vikings last week and have been labeled a 5.5-point favorite over the disappointing Jacksonville Jaguars (0-2) squad that fell at home to the Bills last week.
The Baltimore Ravens (1-0) opened the season with a win over the Bengals and then had last week’s game against the Texans rescheduled due to Hurricane Ike and now they’ll enter Sunday’s game against a struggling Cleveland Browns (0-2) team as a 2-point pick.
In the game of the week Tony Romo and Terrell Owens will look to keep the chemistry that brought the Dallas Cowboys (2-0) a win over the Eagles on Monday Night Football when they hit the road as a 3-point favorite to take on Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers (2-0) who have looked solid in their first two games.
The San Diego Chargers (0-2) have lost two heartbreakers to start the season with last week’s loss to the Broncos being particularly difficult but they still have the pieces and will host Brett Favre and the New York Jets (1-1) as a 9-point favorite on Monday Night Football.
