Medvedev Accuses West of Pushing Russia Behind New “Iron Curtain”

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has accused the West of using the recent conflict in Georgia to push his country into isolation and behind a new “Iron Curtain.’

Speaking from Moscow Medvedev stated, “We are in effect being pushed down a path that is founded not on fully-fledged, civilized partnership with other countries, but on autonomous development, behind thick walls, behind an Iron Curtain.”

Medvedev blamed the West for using the Georgia conflict to create a wedge between Russia and the rest of the world. The Russian president insisted his country’s intentions were not to cause friction between the rest of the world but adamantly defended the decision to protect the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia during the war with Georgia.

On Thursday U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice declared Russia was on a “one-way path to isolation and irrelevance.”
