Many Americans often confuse the Memorial Day and Veterans Day holidays. Memorial Day is a day set aside to honor military service members who were injured or lost their lives in battle. Veterans Day also honors deceased veterans, but its main purpose is to show appreciation for living veterans who have served in the military.
Veterans Day is Thursday, November 11. Take this opportunity to acknowledge a military veteran by sending a Veterans Day floral arrangement from Carithers Flowers. In addition to friends and family who have served in the military, send flowers or a gift basket to your local American Legion post or senior center. Your generosity and thoughtfulness for those who have served our country is sure to be appreciated!
History of Veterans Day
Veterans Day, previously known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918.
In 1954, after the end of both World War II and the Korean War, U.S. Congress instead referred to the holiday as “Veterans” Day. And in 1975, after a confusing debate about the official date of the holiday, President Gerald R. Ford signed a law which stated that Veterans Day be observed on November 11.
Since then the holiday has been regarded as a celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
