The Mesothelioma & Asbestos Awareness Center Encourages Mesothelioma Patients To Consider All Methods When Developing A Cancer Treatment Plan

Better communication between patients, doctor can lead to a more successful treatment program

Patients who suffer from mesothelioma cancer face a variety of difficult decisions, especially when it comes to the development of a treatment plan. There are the obvious, traditional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation, but there are also a number of additional options available, and the vast number of choices may overwhelm and confuse a newly-diagnosed patient.

When formulating a mesothelioma treatment program, it is important to consider the following:

What type of mesothelioma cancer do you have? There are three types: pleural, (occurring in the lining of the lungs) peritoneal (found in the lining of the abdomen) and pericardial (located in the lining of the heart).

Where is the tumor located, and what size is it?

Has the cancer metastasized? If so, to what degree and to where has it spread?

In what stage is your mesothelioma cancer?

How old are you? Are you healthy enough to begin various treatment programs?

Once patient and doctor have answered these questions, a plan for treatment can be developed. Oncologists and thoracic cancer specialists may recommend chemotherapy, radiation and/or surgery, but it is important to consider each and every option, as each cancer patient is different and will respond differently to treatment.

The Mesothelioma & Asbestos Awareness Center stresses the importance of thoroughly researching each treatment option and consulting a doctor prior to beginning any new treatment regiment.
