China Issues Mass Recall of Milk Products in Addition to Baby Formula

The Chinese health crisis involving baby formula has spilled over into other dairy products after inspectors found several samples to be contaminated with the toxic chemical melamine.

Inspectors tested samples from three dairies and found 10% had shown tainted liquid milk.

Earlier this month melamine was found in milk powder used for baby formula, killing four infants and causing more than 6,000 to fall ill.

It is believed suppliers have been diluting milk as a cost-cutting method and add melamine to give the appearance of higher protein content. Melamine is used in fertilizer, cleaning products and plastics.

As a result several countries have banned the import of Chinese dairy products and stores have cleared their shelves of existing products like ice-cream and yogurt in addition to milk.
