North Carolina Estate Planning Lawyer Sabrina Winters Balances Motherhood and Helping Others Plan Their Future

Working parents have so much to worry about when it comes to raising families and remembering every detail of their day that often many things about life get missed. Even huge decisions like having a will or trust set up for their children seems to elude the majority of parents. As a mother and an estate planning attorney, Winters knows how daunting the task of imagining something catastrophic happening as a parent, but also sees the wisdom in conquering those fears. Yet, a startling amount of parents do not have any written plan in place.

Working from her Ballantyne office, Winters sees parents of all ages who wish to protect their children and their children’s children. “Setting up a will or trust are critical parts of investing in your future,” says Winters. “Planning for your family’s tomorrow is every bit as important as investing in your 401k or finding the right school district to live in. The choices that you make can impact the life of your kids forever.”

The mother of a little girl, Winters manages each day to assist parents, as well as parent herself. Winters was born in New York and raised on Long Island.  Her mother, a teacher, and her father, an engineer, emigrated from Italy and raised her and her siblings with strong family values.  Winters graduated from The State University of New York at Stony Brook in Stony Brook, New York, in 1992, and then from Thomas M. Cooley Law School, in Lansing, Michigan in 1998.  Shortly thereafter, she moved back to Long Island, New York where she began practicing Estate Planning, Probate and Administration, Medicaid Planning, Guardianships and Residential Real Estate with a solo practitioner.

In 2004, Winters and her husband Timothy decided to make a life changing move to Charlotte, North Carolina.  They became proud parents of a rescued dog named Biscuit and then were blessed with their beautiful daughter four years ago. She wanted to have a career focused on the same family values she was raised with. Her passion is to bring awareness to families and business owners of the importance of planning for their future. Working for a firm did not allow her daughter first and she decided to open a practice of her own.

In 2005, Winters found the family, life and work balance she needed; she opened the doors to her own estate planning firm in North Carolina. Winters cares for clients as if they were family.  Her focus is on building lasting relationships. She understands that many may feel intimidated dealing with attorneys and she hopes to break down those barriers with her warm, unique personable approach.  She has created an Estate Planning strategy that is one which enables her clients to feel comfortable and know that they have created a plan that “fits” their individual needs.

Winters is also capitalizing on social media to help her practice grow. She has created a Facebook page (North Carolina Estate Planning), blogs and videos to explain to parents what all facets of her business are as well as make estate planning accessible for everyone. But finding time in the day between work and family time to blog have been challenging. “Like so many parents, it’s all about discovering ways to make the minutes count,” she says.

The experience with Winters will go against all the stereotypes placed on attorneys.  She prides herself on making parents feel comfortable in sharing their personal asset information, beliefs, fears and desires to her. “Planning the future for someone’s children is a special task and one I don’t take lightly. My parents always looked out for me, as my husband and I look out for our daughter. It’s my job every day to look out for other people’s families and it is a pleasure to do so.”
