Parents in Maryland can now hire a dog to come to their home and sniff out drugs in their teenager’s room. The dog and its trainer will come to the home to search for illegal drugs. The service can cost parents up to $200 an hour, and while many parents believe it is money well spent, some teens argue it is an invasion of their privacy.
"We do everything we can to try to eliminate drugs in the environment," said Anne Wills, owner of Dogs Finding Drugs.
The company will not confiscate any item the dogs find, nor will they notify the police of any item found. Most of the dogs are former police dogs. Before the company will hire the dogs, they must prove that they can sniff out drugs.
Elizabeth Robertson, a spokeswoman for the National Institute on Drug Abuse, cautioned parents to talk to their teenagers about drugs and their inherent dangers. Prevention is the key.
