Jerry Jones said he wouldn’t do it, but worst finally came to worst.
After the embarrassing 45-7 loss to Green Bay last night, sources say the Cowboys owner has fired head coach Wade Phillips. He is to be replaced by offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.
It is the first time Jones has fired a coach in the middle of the season. The decision comes less than a year after Phillips was given a two-year contract extension for the leading Dallas to their first playoff win in over a decade.
It’s been a long fall from the preseason predictions that had the Cowboys becoming the first Superbowl host team to play in the game. The team is now on a 5-game losing streak and 1-7 overall. This is their worst start since 1989 when Dallas finished 1-15. Unfortunately for the ‘Boys, things don’t look to get any easier as they travel to New York to take on the red-hot Giants this Sunday.
Phillips walks away from Dallas with a 35-23 record, and two NFC East titles. He is 83-65 overall as a head coach.
