South African President Thabo Mbeki Agrees to Resign

South African President Thabo Mbeki has agreed to resign from his post after his African National Congress party called for his dismissal following his alleged interference with a controversial corruption case involving his rival and new ANC leader Jacob Zuma.

Zuma is expected to become the next president of South Africa when elections are held next year. He defeated Mbeki in an election for the ANC leadership post but has been involved in a corruption trial that has threatened to challenge his future.

A High Court judge recently suggested the corruption charges were politically motivated and may have involved Mbeki.

Following the judge’s words the ANC opted to push for Mbeki’s resignation and he has agreed to the call once “all constitutional requirements have been met” according to his spokesman.

To formalize the resignation parliament will meet in the coming days where they are expected to appoint the parliamentary speaker as interim leader.

 ANC's Secretary General Gwede Mantashe insisted the decision to ask for Mbeki’s resignation was not to be seen as a punishment but rather to provide “stability and for a peaceful and prosperous South Africa.”
