College Football Scores: Javon Ringer Runs Over Notre Dame, Michigan State Capitalizes on Irish Turnovers in Win

Javon Ringer rushed for 201 yards and a pair of touchdowns, Brett Swenson booted three field goals and the Michigan State Spartans (3-1) took advantage of three Notre Dame (2-1) turnovers and two missed field goals to earn a 23-7 victory on Saturday.

Swenson put the Spartans on the board in the first quarter with a 45-yard field goal but the Irish looked like they would answer later in the frame but Jimmy Clausen was picked off in the endzone and the score stayed 3-0 heading into the second.

Once again the Irish had the chance to tie the score but Brandon Walker missed a 5-yardfield goal attempt. After forcing the Spartans to punt Notre Dame took over deep in their own territory and Clausen quickly turned the ball over with his second interception and this time the Spartans made the irish pay as Ringer scored from a yard out and Michigan State was up 10-0 at the half.

Early in the third it looked like Notre Dame would cut into their deficit as they moved deep into Michigan State territory but Michael Floyd fumbled on the Spartans 14-yard-line. Michigan State then moved down the field and settled for a 26-yard field goal from Swenson to take a 13-0 lead into the fourth quarter.

Clausen finally got the Irish on the board early in the fourth when he hit Floyd on a 26-yard touchdown pass to pull the Irish to within 13-7 but the Spartans answered with Swenson’s third field goal of the game for the 16-7 advantage.

Notre Dame once again moved down the field and lined up for a 41-yard field goal but a poor snap and a bad kick left the Irish pointless and the Spartans pounded away with Ringer in the backfield, eventually scoring on a one-yarder from the big back to seal the game.

Michigan State will face Indiana next week while Notre Dame will look to get back on track against Purdue.
