Pacers Score 144 Points in Historic Game
Indiana Pacers Nearly Achieve a Perfect Quarter
On Tuesday night, the Indiana Pacers made basketball history during their 144-113 victory over the Denver Nuggets. During the third quarter of the game, the Pacers scored an amazing 54 points, exactly double the amount scored by the Nuggets that quarter. With less than 2 seconds left in the quarter, Pacers forward Josh McRoberts missed a three-pointer that would have resulted in a perfect quarter for the Pacers if it went in.
McRoberts says, however, that he wasn't even aware of how close his team was to achieving a perfect quarter. "I didn't know," said McRoberts. "I would have tried to pump-fake it a few more times, and maybe pass it to Mike [Dunleavy]. It's a good record to screw up, I guess."
But that might have not helped matters, because Dunleavy apparently wasn't aware of the situation either. "I didn't realize it until after the fact, or else I probably would have gone over there and stole the ball from him," said Dunleavy, jokingly.
But despite not achieving a perfect quarter, the Pacers still set a number of all-time records. That near-perfect third quarter was the highest scoring quarter in Pacers franchise history, the fourth highest scoring quarter in NBA history, and tied for the second highest scoring third quarter in NBA history.
Pacers coach Jim O'Brien summed up the achievement simply by saying, "That's a quarter of basketball that will be remembered for a long time."
