Ehud Olmert Submits Resignation as Israeli Prime Minister

Ehud Olmert, current Prime Minister of Israel, has submitted his formal resignation to President Shimon Peres but he will remain in position until new PM Tzipi Livni forms a new coalition government.

Olmert announced he would resign in July after he was dogged by corruption charges stemming from his three years in office.

On Thursday Livni was elected as the new leader of the governing Kadima party and she will have just over a month to form a new coalition. If she fails to do so Peres may call on another member of the Knesset to do so.

Peres will also have the option of calling general elections if Livni fails to form the new coalition.
