The Cam Newton drama got even juicer today when Kenny Rogers appeared on a Dallas radio station and made some shocking allegations against Cam’s father, Cecil Newton.
Rogers is the former Mississippi State player who ESPN reported was allegedly a representative of the quarterback during his recruitment out of junior college. It is reported that he sought money from Mississippi State, on behalf of the Newtons, for Cam’s commitment.
In an interview with ESPN 103.3 in Dallas earlier today, Rogers asserted that Cecil Newton had put a price tag on his son during an official visit to Mississippi State in November 2009. When asked how much Newton solicited, Rogers said “Anywhere between $100,000 and $180,000."
Rogers also revealed this specific encounter wasn’t his first conversation with Cecil Newton regarding Cam's recruitment, claiming Newton told him after the 2008 season that “it's not gonna be free this time."
Rogers was unsure if Cam Newton knew about the request to Mississippi State for money. In addition, he says he had "no idea" why Newton chose Auburn and knows nothing about Cam’s recruitment at Auburn.
And while Cecil Newton continues to deny any wrongdoing, officials at Auburn as well as Mississippi State declined comment on Rogers' interview Thursday.
Despite all the allegations, the Tigers quarterback is still expected to play this Saturday against the Georgia Bulldogs.
